“I miss you.”

It’s as simple and as complicated as a human emotion can be.

Today is one of those days when thousands of Americans, including myself, will set aside time to remember and honor an event that changed us as human beings and Americans.

It’s also one of those days when people around the globe will silently, angrily, tearfully and wistfully say, “I miss you,” as they remember a deceased loved one.

For today is a day when the nation mentally turns the clock back 14 years to September 11, 2001, that horrific day of terrorism attacks in New … Read More

9/11: Healing & Resilience

On the thirteenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, my thoughts today are with the people whose lives changed so tragically and so dramatically when their loved ones died. It may not feel to them as if thirteen years has passed since this horrific event.  It may feel as though their loss happened yesterday.  That’s the trick that grief can sometimes play on us.  For no matter how much time has passed, no matter how much work has been put out to move the healing process forward, the anniversary of losing a loved one is a day filled with powerful conflicting… Read More

Grand Central Station, New York City Here is a short clip of award-winning singer songwriter Mary Chapin Carpenter eloquently telling the story that inspired her to write a new song titled, “Grand Central Station,” a song remembering another group of quiet heros from 9/11: the hundreds of people who diligently and passionately worked to clean-up and preserve the hallowed remains of Ground Zero. Before the mantra was jobs, jobs, jobs, it was security, security, security. The security of our nation, the security of our borders, the security of our everyday lives was at the top of the nation’s agenda.  No one could do enough to make America safe and secure.  And we were willing to do whatever it took to make it happen: reduced civil liberties, metal detectors and wands, pat downs, no shoes.A decade later, 9/11 mastermind Osama bin Laden is finally dead as are some of his top operatives. But how safe are we? When the 10th anniversary of 9/11 arrives… Read More

School Days — Reminding Teachers About Loss

August 31st, 2011

School days are here again and the usual anxieties are filling children’s heads: a new year of learning, a new teacher, new friends or a new school.  Along with thoughts about wearing the right clothes, hanging out with the cool crowd, comes an additional layer of concerns for those children who are still dealing with a death in the family or perhaps one that may have occurred during the summer. This school year also brings the commemoration of the tenth anniversary of 9/11 and reminders of this event are all around us: television specials, national ceremonies and the opening of… Read More

The Twin Towers, the Pentagon & Flight 93

When President Obama officially announced on television late last night that Osama bin Laden had been killed by U.S. forces in Pakistan, my thoughts went immediately to the relatives and friends of the thousands of people whose lives were lost in the Twin Towers, the Pentagon and Flight 93. For almost ten years, these people have been trying to put the pieces of their shattered lives back together so that they may heal and perhaps build some kind of a future after having their loved ones violently taken from them. I wondered how and what they were feeling now that… Read More
