I was looking through my Instagram feed earlier this week and a picture popped up that was so totally out of season that it made me burst out laughing.  The picture was an almost arctic scene of the infamous Flatiron Building in New York City during a winter blizzard.

The contradiction of standing outside during the dog days of August while holding my phone and looking at a picture of the winter wind whipping people dressed in coats, hats, boots and gloves, walking with their heads down, knee deep in snow, as they tried to find shelter from the unforgiving … Read More

Serenity – Fresh & Green

I’m thinking this morning about quiet on this new Monday morning. Quiet while I gather my thoughts and remember my goals. Quiet while I center myself, hoping that my soul finds harmony. Quiet while I breath deeply and calm my thoughts. For today is a new day and I can choose to release within myself the power to become healthier; mentally and physically.. As today begins to unfold, I think about this inspirational thought from Thoreau that takes me to a peaceful green space:   “A single gentle rain makes the grass many shades greener. So our prospect brighten… Read More

Loco For Tomatoes ~ Recipe

Oh how I love tomatoes! When I eat a ripe summer tomato, I feel as if I am feasting on the warmth of the sun, absorbing all of it’s healing rays and golden goodness. YUM, YUM, YUM!! Yesterday I was in search of these lovely red beauties and so I toddled on down to the farmer’s market that is located a few blocks from my Washington, DC office.  I find buying fresher food from the farmer’s market to be empowering.  It’s all about taking care of ourselves and what we eat.  How we respond to stress or a personal crisis,… Read More

Strawberry Fields Forever

Once you have tasted a juicy strawberry, fresh, fresh, fresh from the local farm where it was grown, you will never want to eat another one of those grocery store strawberries (that are white inside) ever again. For the second week in a row, strawberries were the star yesterday at the FRESH Farm Farmer’s Market near the White House.  Beautiful, red, ripe strawberries were lined up in a row just waiting to be bought and eaten.   Photo Courtesy of FRESH Farm Markets I bought a huge amount of strawberries last week and so did a friend of mine from… Read More

White House Market Day Is Back!

YAY!!! The farmer’s market near the White House is now open for business on Thursdays and I’m so happy that fresh fruits and veggies are close to my office, ready to be picked and enjoyed. I’m so proud of myself! I took these pics myself! As I arrived today, there was almost a party atmosphere at the market today around 1 pm.  When I walked to the market area, which is one block from the White House (www.freshfarmmarkets.org), there were almost 200 people shopping and sampling local produce.  People were spilling out of their office buildings, shaking off the cold… Read More

Thought Of The Day

To me, this picture captures that wonderful unfettered feeling of freedom:  the freedom of possibility, the freedom of creativity.  I imagine myself inside the VW van, humming along on the highway.  It’s warm outside, not hot hot, and the windows are down; Janis Joplin’s great whiskey voice is singing, “Freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose. . .” Today when I see those VW wagons driving down the highway, I am instantly reminded of my childhood in the 1960’s and the sometimes excellent adventures of being a teenager.  It was a lot fun but I don’t think I… Read More

Photo By Patti Raab Have you ever been sitting in your car at a traffic light waiting for the light to turn and you look out the window and see something that’s probably been there for months but right at that moment it’s as if you are seeing it for the first time? Why haven’t I noticed that building before?  Are those new plants?  How long has that bench been there? When you slow down or stop the usual routine of what you are doing, it can give you an opportunity to really see the world around you and notice… Read More

Chipotle’s Salsa

June 15th, 2012

Photo By Patti Raab Hey farmer’s market fans — Chipotle was the new vendor yesterday at the farmer’s market near the White House.  What is a national chain of restaurants doing at a farmer’s market you may ask?  I was wondering too until I got to Chipotle’s table.  Chipotle put on a live demonstration showing how easy it is to use summer produce and herbs to make your own fresh salsa.  The store also gave out it’s salsa recipe which I have posted below for you to try. Chipotle, which tries to source organic and local produce when it can, … Read More

Seize the Freshest Foods of May

Yeah!!! The FRESHFARM Market by the White House opened yesterday for its summer/fall season and the freshest and greenest produce was on its’ best behavior sitting in beautiful baskets just begging to be bought, tossed, grilled and eaten. It’s too early in the season for my favorite farm grown tomatoes, but yesterday’s vendors showed off plenty of fresh salad greens, asparagus, kale, bean sprouts and other seasonal crops for urban workers to choose from along with colorful fresh cut flowers and cookies and breads. I could feel the beginnings of summer as I walked from my office to the farmer’s… Read More
