White House Market Day Is Back!

YAY!!! The farmer’s market near the White House is now open for business on Thursdays and I’m so happy that fresh fruits and veggies are close to my office, ready to be picked and enjoyed.
I’m so proud of myself! I took these pics myself!
As I arrived today, there was almost a party atmosphere at the market today around 1 pm.  When I walked to the market area, which is one block from the White House (www.freshfarmmarkets.org), there were almost 200 people shopping and sampling local produce.  People were spilling out of their office buildings, shaking off … Read More

Angelina’s Health Decision

May 15th, 2013

Angelina Jolie made a powerful decision.  It’s not a decision that every woman has the opportunity to make, but I stand and applaud her courage and wish her a future of wellness. Faced with medical information from her doctors that she had an 87 percent risk of developing breast cancer and a 50 percent risk of developing ovarian cancer because she carried the BRCA1 gene, she decided to take control of her health and be proactive.  She decided at the young age of 37 to have a double mastectomy which means she had both of her currently healthy breasts surgically… Read More

Needing Sleep

Lots of great things happen to you while you are asleep. Your skin repairs itself, your mind relaxes and resets itself and your body strengthens its immune system and reduces levels of stress. But you have to do it to reap the benefits. These days people like to brag about how little sleep they need.  I remember reading somewhere that Martha Stewart only sleeps four hours a night.  I thought to myself, “You’ve got to be kidding!  I could never last very long if I only got four hours of sleep a night!” Even Charlie Brown & Lucy Need To Sleep… Read More

Weekends Go Too Fast

I hope your weekend was a good one and that you had a chance to relax and renew yourself. My weekends always seem to fly by and just when I’m feeling as though I have totally brought myself down from the workweek, it’s time to begin a new one. It’s okay though; I selfishly wring every minute of down time out of the weekend that I can.  Even if I am grocery shopping or running other errands, I try to enjoy the outdoors and reduce the pressure to get everything done in record time! I try to unplug myself, even… Read More

Quietude

April 17th, 2013

I am constantly reminding myself to chill out: when I am driving to and from work, when I am at work, or when I am in a situation where my expectations are not even close to matching up to reality. Add to the equation a traumatic event such as the recent bombing at the Boston Marathon and the resulting increased security and it’s no wonder that you, me and others are on edge.  Stressed out.  And the toll that stress takes on our physical health and mental well being is daunting. I don’t think I am alone in feeling this… Read More

The Very Cool Sela Ward

April 12th, 2013

Sometimes on Friday evenings, I watch CBS’s prime-time hit series CSI:NY on television.  I love crime shows and one of the other reasons I like to watch it is Sela Ward, an award-winning actress who plays a very cool, straight-to-the-point detective named Jo Danville. In real life, Ward is a busy mother of two children and a wife as well as a career woman.  Yet she always gives off this aura of being calm, collected and totally together; something I am constantly working towards. This month she landed beautifully and professionally on the cover of  Ladies Home Journal magazine where… Read More

Robin Roberts’ Message

April 2nd, 2013

Robin Roberts is courageously showing us how to be “all in” about life. Over the weekend, I read Parade Magazine’s interview with Roberts, ABC’s news anchor for Good Morning America.  It is no secret that Roberts was diagnosed five years ago with an aggresive form of breast cancer and for the past year she has been fighting a rare life-threatening disease called myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) which affects the blood and bone marrow. Roberts is now back on the job which is miraculous given the physical and emotional toll of her chemotherapy, bone marrow transplant and fragile immune system.  But life… Read More

Seeking Support

March 28th, 2013

Having spent almost two years going to group grief counseling sessions, I am a big believer in talking about the dicey life issues troubling you. Whether it’s grief, drug or alcohol addiction, weight issues or marriage problems, talking can help because you are taking your issues out of the dark and shining light on them for everyone to see.  You’re not hiding your issues and acting as though everything is okay and being handled well. The idea of being part of a support group can seem very intimidating. It was not an easy decision for me: in talking about my pain,… Read More
