Sonia Sotomayor

I am a big believer in the idea that when someone offers you a helping hand that you should turn around and offer your hand to help someone else.
It’s the right thing to do and haven’t you also found that you always get more out of life when you become actively involved and emotionally invest in it?  I know I do!
I’m guessing that U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor practices this same philosophy because she recently went back to her childhood roots in the Bronx, NY and spent the day with young children from the Dream Big program … Read More

With the recent election of Pope Francis I to head the Catholic Church, people are talking about faith and religion with a renewed enthusiasm. I think people are filled with hope and that’s always a good thing. Facebook, Twitter, Yahoo! and the mainstream news outlets have been full of stories and comments about what changes, if any, this new pope may bring about.  I was at friend’s house for dinner the other day and the subject of the Pope spontaneously came up.  Even my dentist started talking about it yesterday morning and I don’t think we’ve ever discussed the subject… Read More

When my son was in the midst of deciding where he wanted to go to college, Fordham University was near the top of his list.  But he was stuck between Fordham and another school and couldn’t make a decision. Trying to help him, I played the role of Devil’s Advocate:  “You are getting ready to graduate from a Jesuit high school and now you are thinking of attending a Jesuit university?  Aren’t you tired of the Jesuits?  Don’t you want to get out of the box and spread your wings in a different academic atmosphere?” My son didn’t miss a… Read More

I spent the weekend with thousands of dreamers: young men and women who after four years of study and hard work at Fordham University graduated with a degree in their field of study.  Some have jobs and some do not but I would say that all are ready to set the world on fire with their enthusiasm in order to contribute to making the world a better place. It was a perfectly planned and executed commencement ceremony and I was one proud mama watching my son give his speech as Salutatorian and later accept his diploma.  Singer Tony Bennett and… Read More

For the past week or so I have been happily reading the Facebook postings of friends writing about their children’s graduations from college.  It’s an exciting time for all of my friends and their children and I congratulate all on reaching Diploma Day! Now this weekend it’s my turn and I really can’t believe it.  It’s feels as though life is on fast forward and I intend to hang on and enjoy the ride. I am reading the commencement letter outlining Fordham University’s May 18 and 19 graduation ceremonies and already I’m feeling a mix of conflicting emotions.  My son… Read More

I took a quick one-night trip to New York City on Monday to attend a senior awards dinner at Fordham University’s Lincoln Center campus.  I was invited by the Dean of Students and was asked not to tell my son that I was coming because my son didn’t even know that he was going to receive an award.  My lips were sealed and my bag was packed.  There was no way that I was going to miss this event because this is the kind of stuff that parents live for. But at the same time I couldn’t leak the info… Read More
