I know several people who work for the federal government.

Putting aside the political debate about why the government is currently shutdown, this is a time of anxiety for many of these people and their families.

These people work hard and approach their jobs in a professional manner and now find themselves in an awful place.

Some of them who are considered to be “essential” must show up for work knowing that they will not get paid.  Others are furloughed and have no idea when they will go back to work or get paid.

New Year Resilient You

If it is dark outside when I wake up, I will light a candle, close my eyes and slowly gather my thoughts before the day gets away from me. There is something about the quiet of the morning that I cherish.  The day is still fresh and lighting a candle in the dark fills me with hope. It fills me with the notion that today is full of possibilities and I can feel whole and valued. It reinforces the idea that yesterday is past and today is a fresh start. It is uplifting to feel the warmth and light from… Read More

What Inspires You?

People from all walks of life inspire me. From the guy who delivers my mail to a person in public life who is willing to step up and speak out for a just cause. It isn’t always what they do but how they live their lives. These inspiring people are willing to take a risk, to roll the dice. They let the chips fall where they may. Because they know that we only get one shot at this big beautiful thing called life and they put themselves out there in a unique way. Even when they are afraid. Even… Read More

Simple Moments To Moment

October 27th, 2016

Dear Friends, I recently found the below inspiration on one of my Instagram accounts and it really jumped off the screen for me: Just for today, keep it simple. Don’t be so hard on yourself. Look at your life for all you have gained rather than lost. Look at your path for everything you have got through rather than everywhere you think you should be. Celebrate rather than criticize. Experience rather than expect. See how that goes. Just for today.                 ~ by S.C. Earth Wind & Fire Remembered

Maurice White Courtesy of Getty Images   The music that some bands create can be so distinctive that you know their songs right away.  Almost instantly.  As in when you hear the first few bars of a song, you know it’s theirs and theirs alone. Falling into this unique category would be the fabulous and funky music created by the hit making machine called Earth, Wind & Fire. Maurice White, a major musical talent who founded Earth, Wind & Fire and co-wrote such hits as “Shining Star,” “Sing A Song,” “September,” “Reasons,” and “Fantasy,” sadly died last week in his… Read More

Sweet Summer Stress Reduction

Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you.                ~ Anne Lamott There’s a rumor floating around that summer is over but I don’t believe one word of it. Temperatures in Washington, DC are still hovering in the low 90’s, corn on the cob is still in season, along with awesome tasty tomatoes, and I’m continuing to wear flip flops to work even though the calendar says September. I admit I have seen a few signs that some kind of seasonal change is upon us such as leaves changing colors and falling off trees,… Read More

Loco For Tomatoes ~ Recipe

Oh how I love tomatoes! When I eat a ripe summer tomato, I feel as if I am feasting on the warmth of the sun, absorbing all of it’s healing rays and golden goodness. YUM, YUM, YUM!! Yesterday I was in search of these lovely red beauties and so I toddled on down to the farmer’s market that is located a few blocks from my Washington, DC office.  I find buying fresher food from the farmer’s market to be empowering.  It’s all about taking care of ourselves and what we eat.  How we respond to stress or a personal crisis,… Read More

Philip Seymour Hoffman

February 4th, 2014

I was getting ready for work yesterday morning when I turned on the radio which was tuned to NPR.  The station was airing an interview it did with the incredibly talented and award-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman when he was appearing on Broadway in 2012 as Willy Loman in a revival of the classic play, “Death of A Salesman.” It was strange to hear Hoffman’s voice on the radio knowing that friends had found him Sunday in his New York apartment sadly and tragically dead of an apparent drug overdose at the young age of 46. I stopped and listened… Read More
