Wow! This time the weather forecasters were right.
We got covered in snow in Washington, DC.
Many, many times, snow is forecast for our part of the world and then nothing shows up.  The Washington, DC region is a strange weather pocket that seems to create it’s own kind of weather which can be that sometimes the air is just not cold enough and the forecasted winter storms come close to us but then miss us.
The weather forecast misses wouldn’t be so bad but the local news media hype of what is expected to come our way that always … Read More

Thoughts on New Year’s Eve

Time is one the most precious of commodities we have. It should never be wasted and always treasured for its possibilities. On this New Year’s Eve of 2013, I hold in my hands my fresh new calendar for 2014 that I will hang in the kitchen tomorrow and as I flip through the untouched months and days, I wonder what this year holds for me, my family and my friends. Of course I hope for only good and fantastic things to happen to those I care about and that includes you my dear and wonderful readers!  Thank you so much… Read More

Have you been naughty or nice this year? Santa knows which one, and as the song says, he’s making a list and checking it twice! On this Christmas Eve, that seemed to arrive so quickly this year, I hope Santa is good to you and brings you exactly what you wished for.  Santa is one busy dude you know so don’t forget to put out the milk and cookies for him!  Sometimes we leave him a nice cold beer because we know that with all of his dashing around that he has worked up quite a thirst! Summertime Music In December

Baby, it’s cold outside isn’t it? Weather predictions of flurries, dropping temperatures and possible black ice bring with it winter’s outer armor of boots, scarves, gloves and woolen hats.  Meanwhile, kids around the nation are praying for snowstorms to arrive for Santa Claus and Christmas and extra days off from school. And in the midst of all this Winterness, a friend tweeted this rockin’ new video (see below) titled “Keep This In” by Phillip Noss that transports me to one of my favorite places: THE BEACH!!!! Santa Delivers To The Beach Doesn’t He? I love the warm, breezy feel to… Read More

Congratulations Pope Francis!

Yesterday’s news that Time magazine selected Pope Francis as their Person Of The Year surprised me just as much as when the College of Cardinals elected him to become Pope. I didn’t think it would really happen but I am ecstatic that it did! I knew Pope Francis was a finalist for the annual honor but I really thought that Time magazine was going to go with former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden, who this year released hundreds of thousands of classified government documents revealing the depth of the U.S. government’s surveillance on phone and internet communications. But spiritual… Read More

Star Night Star Bright

I am one of those old school people who still have a daily newspapers delivered to my house.  During the work week when I go outside to get the newspaper, it is dark and the moon and the stars are still shining in the sky. It’s a great time to collect my thoughts for the day. This morning I took a moment to stand still on the sidewalk, take a deep breath, and say a prayer of gratitude for a new day and whatever it might bring.  As I gazed at the quiet beauty of the moon hanging in the… Read More

Holiday Mash-Up

In music, mashups are when a performer or group combines the instrumentals of one song with the vocals of another song and then the mashup, or blending if you will, is played as a new song.  Sometimes it works and sometimes it flops. In retail, this is the time of year for practicing what I think of as a huge marketing mash-up.  Stores no longer wait for one holiday to almost happen and then stock the shelves with the decorations or products for the next holiday.  There is no longer any retail restraint with regard to holidays; it’s just throw… Read More

Compassionate Care

November 6th, 2013

I write about the subject of hospice care today because November is National Hospice Care month.  I don’t usually pay attention to the themes of specific months but in this case I saw a tweet about it and wanted to draw attention to the incredible people who do this important work. I have the greatest respect for the people who do hospice work.  The time and endless amounts of energy poured into this work of providing compassionate care to those diagnosed as terminally ill is critical to the patient and the families trying to do their best as a loved… Read More
