Some people say that vacation is having nothing to do and all day to do it in.
I think it’s more that you have things to do but you do it when you want.
And the things that you do are more for you than for others.
I feel when a group of adult friends are on vacation that everyone is similar to being a free agent with no schedule. My vacation philosophy is best reflected in the lyrics from “Go Where You Wanna Go,” sung in perfect group harmony by the 60’s rock folk group, The Mamas & the Papas:
“You gotta go where you wanna go,
Do what you wanna do
With whoever you wanna do it with.”
Whether it’s taking a walk on the beach, sleeping in, cooking, shopping, kayaking, swimming, or just sitting on the beach all day and reading a fantastic book, your time is your own, unfiltered and unplugged.
Everyone needs a break and I took full advantage of my leisure time to read a lot, eat too much and fill up my resilience reserves.
More importantly, I made a promise to myself to try and keep this relaxed feeling for as long as I can.
The true test will come today as I return back to work.
