Yesterday morning, one of my nieces delivered her second child and shazam, just like that our large boisterous family has grown by one more!

We expected her arrival at any time during this past week with everyone closely following the daily ups and downs of labor; starting, stopping, starting, stopping until the doctors decided that yesterday was the right time to induce and really kick her labor into high gear.

At that point, things started happening very quickly and then suddenly Baby Lilly was here!

When you are not around babies on an everyday basis, you can … Read More

Woo! Woo! Readers!! I can see the weekend on the horizon!! And for Friday’s sake, we need a good laugh! Plain ole silly laughter just lightens our burdens and gives us a break from sadness and pain.  Even in the most difficult of times, laughter continually gives me the strength to keep going and hope for better days. I do have a tendency to make jokes about most of the things that happen to me and I think it just helps make me feel that the day will go smoother if I can laugh.  We all are familiar with that… Read More

A Touching Moment at CVS

September 13th, 2013

I was in the CVS near my office a few days, popping in to buy something for an officemate. I was buying only one item so I stood in the self-checkout line. But then the regular line opened up.  A young African American woman behind the cash register waved for me to come on over to her register so I did. As she scanned my CVS discount card and my purchase, her eyes looked at the pearl necklace I had on.  Since her hands were full, she tilted her head in my direction. “I like your pearl necklace.” “Thank you! … Read More

A Positive Attitude In Cancerland

April 10th, 2013

I don’t always feel positive about all of the situations that life throws my way but I do feel very positive about life. Would I continue to feel positive if I were diagnosed with cancer? I would hope so!  I would hope that my love of living, my love for my family and friends and my love of life in general would kick my fighting spirit into high gear and that I would become determined not to let cancer win. But that’s easy for me to say because I have not been diagnosed with cancer.  I know a handful of… Read More

Reflections of Nora Ephron’s Son

Nora Ephron Crying is unsettling.  Especially if you are watching one of your parents do it. My son hates it when I cry and has said that when I would cry all the time immediately after his father/my husband’s death, he would feel this mix of emotions that he didn’t want to feel and so he would walk away.  I understand it and think his reaction was perfectly normal.  He was thirteen years old and dealing with something that adults find hard to handle.  He was just trying to survive. Now, at twenty two years old, my son explains his… Read More

Happy Birthday to My Irish Twin

December 6th, 2012

Happy Birthday Sheila! Today is my sister Sheila’s birthday so for the next month we will be the same age. How can we be the same age for a month? We are Irish twins. I was born in January and she was born in December of the same year.  Busy parents, yes?  Irish twins are defined as a pair of siblings born within 12 to 16 months of each other. When we were young children, our mother would dress us alike as though we were twins and we have lots of pictures from holidays in the same dresses and coats. … Read More

A Mama Hug

I took a quick one-night trip to New York City on Monday to attend a senior awards dinner at Fordham University’s Lincoln Center campus.  I was invited by the Dean of Students and was asked not to tell my son that I was coming because my son didn’t even know that he was going to receive an award.  My lips were sealed and my bag was packed.  There was no way that I was going to miss this event because this is the kind of stuff that parents live for. But at the same time I couldn’t leak the info… Read More
