Not To Worry

Why is it that I think that worrying about something will affect the circumstances of the thing I’m  worrying about?
It’s as though the more I worry about it, the more I think I can push the situation to go the way I want.
My siblings and I talk a lot about worrying and why we worry.  Like A LOT.  As in a couple of times a week.
It’s a good thing I come from a family of six children so we can rotate our calls to each other and no one ends up being burnt out from the constant … Read More

Say Yes to Empowerment

The essence of resilience is bouncing back to a healthy place after you have been counted out. Emotionally resilient people recognize that some good can come from even the most traumatic events.  Not only are people resilient but cities can be too.  Look at New York City.  In the 1970’s, New York City was a dangerous place.  It’s economy was on the verge of collapse and its streets and subways were full of crime and gangs and homeless people.  People could not find jobs.  Traveling to New York City today, there is hardly any evidence of its darker and grittier… Read More

Your Life, Your Movie

“Stay In Your Own Movie” ~ DeVon Franklin When my son was a young child, he would talk about going to various friend’s houses to play and how wonderful their house was, how great their snacks were and how nice their parents were and how perfect everything always seemed when he was there at whatever friends house he happened to be.  Sometimes he would even tell me that the parents of some of his friends never even ever argued.  Ever. First I told him that they were waiting for him to leave so they could have their argument and then… Read More

Pulling Together

I began writing Cry Laugh Heal in December 2010 to start an online discussion about grief and resilience, in particular to talk about the many ways we process it and how we can arrive at the realization that we can find strength and a different kind of future through our pain. My husband died in 2003 and I found that grief was not a topic most people wanted to talk about.  What a surprise right?  Of course, it was a subject I could go on and on about but in general it really makes people feel very uncomfortable and they… Read More

The Magic of A Party

The Washington, DC weather on Saturday may have been rainy, foggy and dreary but it had  no affect on the atmosphere inside one cozy house in Northwest DC where it was bright, warm and full of happiness. Was this house in some kind of weather bubble? Yes it was because it was the site of a birthday party that my super duper spectacular friends gave for me and I can say without hesitation that it was the best birthday party ever!!  Talk about healing!  Wow!  I was feeling the love and it was totally through the stratosphere for me in… Read More

Today is about something light and healing because lots of people will be traveling so that they can spend Thanksgiving Day with those they care about. I love Kid President and his ability to make me and many, many others smile and laugh about the crazy things that happen in the unpredictable world around us.He’s irresistible!  I hope you agree! Kid President This new video is particularly cute (especially if you like corn dogs) and timely as Kid President reminds us of 20 things we need to remember to say more often to each other because these words repeated on… Read More

A Silly Ode to October

I know the calendar says it’s the month of October but there have been days when it has felt as though it were July. When it feels like summer I am definitely one happy camper!!  It’s all I can do to stop myself from driving to the beach!!  But then there are the shorter days when it now gets dark earlier and earlier and that is difficult for me to deal with.  It’s really a downer to come out of work at the end of the day and it’s dark already.  Autumn may not be one of my favorite times… Read More

Here’s A Truth

Here’s a truth:  when I write about the importance of being positive and finding positive inspiration in our lives and the idea of finding and doing new things, sometimes it is as much for me as it is for you. Please don’t ever get the idea that I always have it together and that I am always able to just forge ahead with my life without any hesitations or second guessing or ever feeling inadequate.  I have those feelings just as anyone.  Those feelings tend to sneak up on me when I least suspect it and I fight hard to… Read More

Jesus Tweets

There is definitely an art to tweeting.  The ability to say something precise and succinct in 140 characters or less is not an easy thing to master.  I still have a lot to learn about tweeting but I have to say that I do enjoy it!  I don’t find tweeting to be shallow or a waste of time.  I think it’s a matter of letting extraneous words fall by the wayside and getting right to your point. Thousand of tweets ago, when my son helped me open my account, I first stared at the computer screen and thought, “What should… Read More
