Strawberry Fields Forever

Once you have tasted a juicy strawberry, fresh, fresh, fresh from the local farm where it was grown, you will never want to eat another one of those grocery store strawberries (that are white inside) ever again.
For the second week in a row, strawberries were the star yesterday at the FRESH Farm Farmer’s Market near the White House.  Beautiful, red, ripe strawberries were lined up in a row just waiting to be bought and eaten.

A Summer Itch

I talked to one of my great friends today on the telephone.  I thought she was at home or running errands but then she said she had to get off the phone because she was getting ready to cross the Bay Bridge. As in the Bay Bridge over the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland.Ding! Ding! Ding! She’s. Going. To. The. Beach! Right away, I began to feel the symptoms of an incurable condition called “Beach Fever.” My friend’s news dovetailed perfectly with the recent warming of the sun in Washington, DC (predicted 82 degrees today!) and turning the calendar to the mojo… Read More

January Baby

I am a January Baby and yesterday was my birthday. I am happy to have a birthday (Elvis and I were born on the same day!) but I wish I had been born at a different time of the year. By the time my birthday arrives, people are usually burnt out from the holidays.  Throughout the years, I have found that friends and family are either on a diet in January or they had spent too much money on Christmas so they are back on a budget in January.  Sometimes I have received gifts in Christmas wrapping paper and sometimes… Read More

Oil Painting By William Merritt Chase Happy Saturday My Wonderful and Faithful Readers!! It’s Labor Day Weekend and that means that some of us are recalibrating and getting ready for the beginning of a new season.  Chrysanthemums, pumpkins and school supplies are already pushing their way into the stores. What’s the hurry? It may be the first day of September but it’s still warm and sunny and mentally I am all about the breezes of summer and how it makes me fine. . . Do your remember the Seals and Crofts classic song, Summer Breeze?  I can hear the screened… Read More

Summer Fun

During the summer when I was a child, my mother used to let me and my siblings sit on the front steps of our house after the sun had set and it was almost night time.  We had taken our baths and we go outside in our pajamas.  It felt adventurous and at the same time silly!! What risk takers we were, right? We loved it because we got to stay up late since there wasn’t school to attend and there also was an incredible feeling of freedom and naughtiness.  We would play games outside in the warm summer air… Read More

Ferris Wheels In August

August 14th, 2012

The first week of August hangs at the very top of summer, the top of the live-long year, like the highest seat of a Ferris wheel when it pauses in its turning. The weeks that come before are only a climb from balmy spring, and those that follow a drop to the chill of autumn, but the first week of August is motionless, and hot. It is curiously silent, too, with blank white dawns and glaring noons, and sunsets smeared with too much color. Often at night there is lightning, but it quivers all alone.                                                                          ~Natalie Babbitt, Tuck Everlasting… Read More

Summertime Sayings

Courtesy of Katie’s Pencil Box Summer is the time when one sheds one’s tensions with one’s clothes, and the right kind of day is jeweled balm for the battered spirit. A few of those days and you can become drunk with the belief that all’s right with the world.                                                       ~ Ada Louise Huxtable… Read More

YOLO

July 3rd, 2012

I recently became familiar with the term YOLO.  My son used it in his graduation speech and I had to sheepishly ask him afterwards what it meant.  “Mom, you know, it means ‘You Only Live Once’!” Of course I know the phrase, “You Only Live Once” and have heard it at least a million times, but I don’t think of it as YOLO. It’s hard to stay on top of the latest in lingo especially when it’s constantly changing!!  Everywhere I turn, I either hear or see someone saying YOLO or it’s stamped on T-shirt’s or painted and written as… Read More
