One recent weekend, I stood at the kitchen sink washing a few dishes, listening to the quiet of the early morning as another day slowly revealed itself.  A few birds chirped to each other and occasionally a parent and child would stroll by walking their dog.

The window over the sink was open and I felt the summer air gently lift my hair and float over my face and arms as the warm water and liquid soap spilled over my hands.  The tree limbs were gently swaying, pushing the leaves into each other and then bringing them back again.

Ask The Lightning Bugs

Many would say that the oppressive heat that has been visiting the Washington, DC area is proof. Or they might say that the proof is in the feast of freshly picked juicy strawberries that fill the local grocery stores and farmer’s markets. On the other hand, the roses and hydrangeas are bursting in bloom and that could also be proof. But for me, the proof that Summer is here is the seemingly instant appearance of lightning bugs that tease and flit through the warm summer air. I saw the first ones of Summer the other night when I went… Read More

Honey Lavender Lemonade — Recipe

I was looking through my Instagram feed earlier this week and a picture popped up that was so totally out of season that it made me burst out laughing.  The picture was an almost arctic scene of the infamous Flatiron Building in New York City during a winter blizzard. The contradiction of standing outside during the dog days of August while holding my phone and looking at a picture of the winter wind whipping people dressed in coats, hats, boots and gloves, walking with their heads down, knee deep in snow, as they tried to find shelter from the unforgiving… Read More

Real Life Re-Entry

Today I reluctantly come back to the real world. I have been living as Beach Bum Girl for the past week and loving every minute of it.  To say that the beach is my Happy Place is an understatement.  Every year I return to the same beach with family and friends so that I may slow down and embrace the simple and beautiful ways of living near the shore. Hopefully a vacation of some sort is in your summer plans.  We all need to spend time away from our work routines and relax because it’s important for maintaining good… Read More

Summer Tune Up

July 11th, 2016

A couple of days ago, I decided it was time for a summer tune up. I sit in front of a computer for my job and even though I try to get up and move around every couple of hours, I know it’s not a healthy routine.  I constantly struggle with my weight and also with making sure that I am exercising enough.  So last week, knowing that I am capable of doing much more, I decided it was time to change things up a bit in order to feel healthier. Instead of doing my regular after work routine… Read More

Dear Winter: Snow again?? Really?? Even though you are not my favorite season, I know there is no way around you and when the calendar signals that it’s your turn, I need to get ready for the temperature changes and the shorter days.  I dragged out all of my winter geared and prepared myself to get in the habit of layering my clothes.  I reminded myself that the one positive thing about your arrival is the celebration of Thanksgiving and Christmas and New Year’s Eve so you do bring some reasons to party. But still you’ve been hanging around… Read More

Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you.                ~ Anne Lamott There’s a rumor floating around that summer is over but I don’t believe one word of it. Temperatures in Washington, DC are still hovering in the low 90’s, corn on the cob is still in season, along with awesome tasty tomatoes, and I’m continuing to wear flip flops to work even though the calendar says September. I admit I have seen a few signs that some kind of seasonal change is upon us such as leaves changing colors and falling off trees,… Read More

Lazing In A Summer Hammock

Summer is my very favorite time of year. I love the food.  I love the clothes.  I love the attitude of summer. And believe me when I tell you that I even love the hot temperatures of summer. I feel more alive in the summer and love the healing spirit of being outdoors on the longer days.   Summer’s amazing long days were brought to my mind yesterday morning as I listened to NPR. Garrison Keillor’s The Writer’s Almanac came on and that made me feel better right away.  He is the American author, storyteller and creator/host of the hugely… Read More

On the last Friday in June, here’s something to think about:    The purpose of life, after all, is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and with out fear for newer and richer experience                             ~   Eleanor Roosevelt… Read More
