Over You — Miranda Lambert

Miranda Lambert We like to think that the people we love will remain with us forever. No one wants to think of a time or be faced with a time when a loved one gets sick, is in an accident or worse and will no longer be here. But unfortunately, sadly and even tragically, life does not work the way we want, as hard as we always try to will it to work our way. The reason why I am drawn to the haunting song, “Over You,” sung here by award-winning country music singer Miranda Lambert, who also co-wrote this… Read More

Live and Let Live

Street Sense is a small newspaper which is sold on the streets of Washington, DC by men and women who are working their way out of being homeless.  Some, but not all of the people selling the newspaper, have been to rehabilitation for drugs or alcohol. These are people working hard to develop resilience in themselves, to bounce back from hard times, and put themselves out there once again to start once again to rebuild their lives.  To me, they are all about the spirit of hope. The Street Sense vendors are always friendly and easy to talk to.  They… Read More

The Adventures of A Treasured Urn

November 2nd, 2012

Today I am not trying to make fun of a serious situation, it’s just that being responsible for a container of a loved one’s ashes can lend itself to a lot of funny situations even if you don’t mean for it to be funny. In my case, my husband was not cremated.  I know if he had been cremated, I would have taken very good care of his ashes.  But eventually, knowing me, I’m sure some kind of accident would have happened. Having his ashes stored in an urn in the house might have started out to be a comforting… Read More

It’s Not What You Think

To show you how little I knew about loss and the grieving process, I thought that the first year after my husband’s death was going to be the hardest time that I would ever have to experience.  My thinking was something along the lines of  “If I can get the first year under my belt, then each year after that will become easier to handle.” Right? Guess what? Not. Always. True. Grief is always full of surprises and just when you think you have it under control, you don’t. The first year was so raw with emotion for me… Read More

The Secret of Life

I find it is important for the survival of the resilient spirits in my inner woman to make quiet time for myself.  My inner woman is all about achieving personal peace and developing emotional strength. For me, the road to personal peace is found when I seek to quiet my mind and spirit.  Usually ten to fifteen minutes every day is enough for me to gather my thoughts and to try and figure out my daily goals; or at least try and figure out what direction I think I would like for my day to take.  Sometimes my goal is… Read More

Life According to Winnie the Pooh

February 7th, 2012

“What day is it,?” asked Pooh. “It’s today,” squeaked Piglet. “My favorite day,” said Pooh.” I have a soft spot in my heart for Winnie the Pooh and all of his friends in the Hundred-Acre Wood.  It reminds me of a more innocent time when my son was a child and he would sit in my lap or his father’s lap and we would read Winnie the Pooh aloud to him.  I’m going to date myself now, but we also had Winnie the Pooh tapes to pop in the VCR (no CD’s then) and watching Pooh and especially Tigger together… Read More
