I’m Walking…Yes Indeed

Walking Child

Whenever I find my mind spinning around, thinking about too many things at once, my go-to solution is to get outside and start walking.

Walking helps me clear my mind of cobwebs and clogged up thoughts.

Walking is good for getting rid of swirling, twirling thoughts that seem to endlessly fly around with no direction in sight.

Walking also gives me a sense of accomplishing something…if only to exercise my needy body!

As I walked in the chilly outdoors yesterday (it is April right?), I let my mind wander while taking in the much needed change of scenery, trying … Read More

Momentum Of The Day

My car has been in the repair shop for the past 24 hours so public transportation is my way to get home for awhile. When I got off the Metro last night, I decided to do without riding the bus and instead walk the rest of the way home. It’s a little over a mile from the Metro stop to my home but it was a warm evening and I wasn’t in a hurry and I thought the walk would be good for me after sitting at a desk most of the day. Right away it felt good to move… Read More

Sweating For The Wedding

Jelly beans.  Cookies.  Cakes.  They are all calling out. Especially the jelly beans.  They are like crack for me.  There is a guy in my office who gave up chocolate for Lent and now he has a bowl of jelly beans on his desk which he continues to constantly refresh when the contents get low.  Ugh!  To me, that is just replacing one kind of sugar for another but oh well; each to his own. Anyway, I can’t tell you the amount of self control it takes for me to deny myself the jelly beans as I walk past his… Read More

Walkin’ Off Those Cupcakes

If you are anything like me, I have a tendency to overindulge on sweet treats over the weekends.  Especially now that Halloween candy seems to be everywhere!! Is it me or does it seem that right around the holidays the sugar manufacturers manage to introduce some new combination of ooey, gooey chocolatey temptation that we really don’t need but have to try? I try hard to crank up the amount of exercise I do every day to counteract the extra weekend calories but it just seems to get harder every year to work off those extra LBs. It’s a never… Read More

Hooray! The Cake is Gone!

While cleaning up my kitchen from a family Easter party, the leftovers were talking to me.  Specifically, a delicious cake in the shape of an Easter Egg that a guest had brought from a local eatery called Wagshal’s.  I couldn’t resist and as I stood there with a fork in hand pushing away the icing and eating only the cake, I knew that this was not a good thing to be doing.  But I didn’t care. I was feeling stressed and I wanted immediate relief.  And I got it.  After about four or five bites, I got mad at myself… Read More

Reward Yourself

When I find myself in times of worry or stress, I often handle it by giving myself rewards. I focus on the stressful or worrisome tasks that I have to deal with and then in the back of my mind I tell myself that when I’m done with whatever it is for the time being, I will do something that will make me feel better about life. For me, rewards are sometimes a critical part of managing the darker sides of life.  Rewards give me a boost and make me feel as though I can carry on.  It can be… Read More

Moving Into Monday

I hear my stationary bicycle calling to me. “Come on.  You have calories and fat to burn off.  You need to get your heart pumping.  Get your butt in gear.  I’m here.  Where are you?” Ah, the rhythms of life!! It’s hard to get myself in the exercise groove but I remind myself that I’m doing something good for me.  There is a payoff: exercise is a must for the whole me; the mind/body connection and on top of that it’s healing. On some level, aerobic exercising or general movement such as walking, dancing, yoga or even running helps me… Read More

Ways To Change the Holiday Menu

I was a very fat baby.  A happy baby but also an overweight baby. I have this theory that all of those fat cells from my infancy are still with me, lying dormant, and whenever I decide to indulge in all things buttery and/or sugary, those same fat cells immediately wake up because they instinctively know it’s a chance to plump up again. It doesn’t take much for me to change my eating habits from good to bad, slapping those extra pounds back on and over Thanksgiving break I could feel it was beginning to happen to me again. It’s… Read More

Moving & Grooving

This past weekend I spent a lot of time in the car driving to visit my brothers and my parents on the Eastern Shore.  The weather vacillated between pouring rain, strong wind gusts and then short periods of sunshine which were beautiful but not warm.  The beautiful and sometimes scary Bay Bridge, which crosses over the Chesapeake Bay, even had a wind advisory! Needless to say I didn’t get a chance for much exercise and I am feeling it today.  Kinda loogie; kinda out of it. Physical movement gives me more energy and when I make the effort to walk… Read More
