heart and sun

I was reading an article recently on personal growth and wellness and a phrase caught my attention.

“…have faith in your ability and accept all that comes your way.”

Hmmmmm.  Accept all that comes my way.  I know I have no choice but to accept whatever happens in my life but it’s not always easy to take it as it comes, accept it and move on.  For while I may believe I have the skills or the ability to handle certain situations, I find I am at a point in my life when I would rather not deal with it … Read More

A New Delicious Season

There is nothing like a farmer’s market.  I am totally into them. You can ask anyone who knows me about how much I love to either walk to a farmer’s market or pull the car over to the side of the road to check one out. Some of my favorites include the farmer’s market in Bethany Beach, Delaware and the farmer’s market located in one of New York City’s great public space, Union Square. Yesterday was the season opener for the farmer’s market near my office in Washington, DC so you know I was a happy person as… Read More

Caregiving And Magical Thinking

When I typed “caregiving” into the Google search bar the following phrases immediately came up: Caregiving is difficult Caregiving is ruining my marriage Caregiving is a thankless job Caregiving is killing me Wow!.  More and more families are faced with issues of caregiving and are feeling the physical and emotional drain of it no matter how much you care about and love the person you are trying to help. Caregiving can be rewarding in surprising ways but it also can be challenging in ways you never imagined. I come from a large family and I really can’t remember a time… Read More

Sweating For The Wedding

Jelly beans.  Cookies.  Cakes.  They are all calling out. Especially the jelly beans.  They are like crack for me.  There is a guy in my office who gave up chocolate for Lent and now he has a bowl of jelly beans on his desk which he continues to constantly refresh when the contents get low.  Ugh!  To me, that is just replacing one kind of sugar for another but oh well; each to his own. Anyway, I can’t tell you the amount of self control it takes for me to deny myself the jelly beans as I walk past his… Read More

Dreamy Monday Music

I was cleaning out my car over the weekend and found a Vanessa Williams CD under one of the car seats that I used to play all the time.  Don’t you love it when you unexpectedly find things that you forgot about?  I think the best surprise is when you put on a jacket or a coat you haven’t worn in awhile and you find money in the pockets.  Yes! Isn’t that a great feeling? In any case, getting back to my newly found CD, music is always a great friend.  Every morning as I drive to work, I… Read More

Friday Is Special

Fridays are special and let me count some of the reasons why: — end of the work week — beginning of the weekend — hopeful — full of possibility — triggers need to hum, sing, dance or all three! — time to get together with family or friends — relax by thinking of inspiring thoughts such as the following two I recently discovered: Be content with what you have; rejoice in the way things are. When you realize there is nothing lacking, the whole world belongs to you. ~ Lao-Tzu I do not at all understand the mystery of grace… Read More

She Works Hard For The Money

Let’s talk about money. I know.  The subject of money is a delicate one for it goes to the core of our values, our lifestyles and perhaps even the pride we take in being able to support ourselves. Whether you are 18 or 81-years-old, single, married or widowed, every woman needs to know the financial facts about owning a home and knowing where and how much money is currently in the bank.  Please don’t think that someone is going to go out of their way to explain it to you.  If you already have a person who is helping you… Read More

Drinking Sunshine

This past weekend the winter weather window opened up for a well-timed warming trend and for a few hours our buddy The Sun popped through the cold and the clouds and energized everything in its path. It gave me hope that Spring is really and truly on the way and with it a renewed sense of purpose. What an energy boost! As I sat in my car waiting for the traffic light to turn green, I closed my eyes and drank in as much sunshine and Vitamin D as possible.  Basking in the sun always gives me a… Read More

Do I Have To Go?

When I was a young child, maybe eight or nine years old, my Mom said something to me about the meaning of paying your last respects to those people whom you care about that has stayed with me my whole life. She was talking to me about a family funeral that she and my Dad were getting ready to attend. I remember it as one of those conversations where I followed her from room to room as she talked.  This was not unusual given that she had six children to keep track of so if you wanted… Read More
