Ways To Change the Holiday Menu

I was a very fat baby.  A happy baby but also an overweight baby.

I have this theory that all of those fat cells from my infancy are still with me, lying dormant, and whenever I decide to indulge in all things buttery and/or sugary, those same fat cells immediately wake up because they instinctively know it’s a chance to plump up again.

It doesn’t take much for me to change my eating habits from good to bad, slapping those extra pounds back on and over Thanksgiving break I could feel it was beginning to happen to me again.

This past weekend I spent a lot of time in the car driving to visit my brothers and my parents on the Eastern Shore.  The weather vacillated between pouring rain, strong wind gusts and then short periods of sunshine which were beautiful but not warm.  The beautiful and sometimes scary Bay Bridge, which crosses over the Chesapeake Bay, even had a wind advisory!   Mother Nature may be transitioning us from the warmth and abundance of summer into the cooler and shorter days of autumn, but local farmers are still offering us the bounty of their summer work. Yesterday at the Farmer’s Market near my downtown Washington, DC office, farmers were still selling peaches, zucchini and my personal favorite: tomatoes.  To me, nothing in the produce world beats a homegrown, fresh and ripe tomato.  Tomatoes are simply the best!!
