Ouch!  Is it really Monday?

Four days off from work have been so great, can I repeat so great, for my mind and my soul!!  I went for some walks, did some yard work, caught up on my sleep, saw family and friends on Thanksgiving Day, did a little Christmas shopping and went to the movies and saw the new James Bond movie, “Skyfall.”  It is excellent!! You really must see it if you haven’t already.
But now I have Monday staring me in the face along with a brand new work week.  How do I get motivated … Read More

What Would Nana Do?

When life hands me a difficult situation, I think about my Nana and wonder how she would have handled it. My Nana gives me strength and inspiration because she lived a good and simple life. She and my Pop-Pop raised five children (including my mother) during the Depression on as much as $58 a week and for awhile on nothing because my grandfather lost his job.  During the time that there was no paycheck, they lived on canned goods that a relative got for free and and managed to keep their house and continue to feed and clothe their children.… Read More

Work Can Be Rewarding

Work itself is the reward.  If I choose challenging work it will pay me back with interest.  At least I’ll be interested even if nobody else is.  And this attempt for excellence is what sustains the most well lived and satisfying, successful lives.    ~ Meryl Streep I am a big believer in working hard.  I grew up in a large family and ever since I can remember I have had chores and responsibilities around the house.  I got my first paying job when I was 16 years old and that’s just the way I was brought up.  A work ethic… Read More

Keep it Simple — John Wooden

I have no shame.  I look for inspiration any place I can get it.  This time I found it in a sports book. A guy in my office had this book sitting on his desk titled, “Wooden.”  Hmmm, I thought, this name sounds familiar but I couldn’t place it.  I opened the book and started reading about Coach John Wooden and his historic UCLA basketball dynasty winning 10 NCAA championships in 12 years, including 88 straight games. I sortof remember hearing my Dad talk about John Wooden and as I paged through the book I realized this is a guy … Read More

Paying Respects @WTC

On a bright and beautiful Sunday morning this past weekend in New York City, I finally had an opportunity to visit the memorial site for the World Trade Center. With my brother, sister-in-law and their 12-year-old daughter, we took a taxi to the 8-acre site in lower Manhattan where the infamous Twin Towers once stood.  The site is deceiving because construction fences surround the area and you can’t see the two black stone squares containing the waterfalls or even hear the waterfalls from the road.  It just looks like a regular construction site. Getting to the memorial site is a… Read More

Discovering The Silver Pen

January 18th, 2012

A close relative just shared this insightful poem with me and my first reaction to it is that  J. Hendel totally nailed it! This poem and others can be found on a beautiful website called The Silver Pen (www.thesilverpen.com).  When I first logged on to The Silver Pen a few days ago, I wondered how I could have missed knowing about this great site since it has been on the internet for a little over three years.  Things like this make me nervous because I start to wonder what else is out there that I don’t know about.  Oh well…I’m… Read More
