Back To The Garden

My son and I recently spent a Sunday afternoon meandering around the Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens in Richmond, Virginia and it reminded me once again of the importance of taking time to immerse yourself in the calming and healing beauty of nature.

I was not particularly stressed out when we entered the spectacular gardens but after walking around among the themed gardens and gentle water fountains for about ten minutes, I found myself slowing down and suddenly stopping on the path to take a deep breath and truly look and listen to where I was at that moment.  We sat … Read More

Dear Resilient Readers, I write a lot about the need to rebuild or recreate our lives after experiencing a loss or traumatic life event because it can be frightening and something people would rather not discuss.  In hopes of helping others, I have written about what worked for me but I also try to pass along helpful anecdotes from people who have worked hard to put themselves on that same healing path. I know for myself that the secret to finding a new way to live my life after my husband died was in taking each day, and sometimes each… Read More

I admit up front that I’m arriving late to the party that has been going on ever since the release of American country singer Lee Brice’s memorable hit song, “I Drive Your Truck.” It’s hard to believe but I just recently discovered this poignant and healing song that was awarded Song of the Year honors at the 47th annual Country Music Association Awards, as well as Song of the Year at the 49th annual Academy of Country Music Awards was released in 2012.  I don’t know what I was doing at the time this song hit the airwaves but I… Read More

Bodega Bay Coast By Michael Flick “Just take my hand, lead, dance with me… and I will simply follow the blueness of the water, the white waves rolling free… where the earth beneath my feet and stars make my heart whole again… in long and priceless moments of shared solitude…” ― Oksana Rus… Read More

One of my sisters became a grandmother this year and I now look forward to receiving short videos from her of the precious time she spends with her granddaughter.  I never get tired of watching this little bundle of energy! We haven’t had a baby in our family for many years since the youngest of the grandchildren are now in high school (A whole other world!).  Watching my sister’s granddaughter reminds me of something that I had forgotten: how quickly children change and the beauty of persistence.  Crawling and pulling herself up to a table, focusing on getting her balance… Read More

It’s been a long week.  Five full days of flat out working, thinking, planning, creating and sometimes worrying. Does this sound like the way your week unrolled?  Or maybe your week was more exciting? Either way, please join me in a big shout out to the end of the week: HAPPY FRIDAY!! Little by little, things got done and accomplishments happened; especially a goal I had set up for myself at the beginning of the week to put aside time to reach out to those close to me who are in need of encouragement and emotional support. I hope for… Read More

An Amazing Gift To Yourself

For the past four years, I have been watching a member of my family refuse to forgive someone. Sounds incredible right? How could someone voluntarily lug around that much baggage every day?  How could someone consciously decide, all on their own, every day, that they would rather be angry with someone 24 hours a day, than try to fix the problem by opening up an honest dialogue and talking about it to the other person? How can you constantly refuse to accept the hundreds of apologies that have been offered? I guess it’s too hard.  I guess it’s too painful.  … Read More

9/11: Healing & Resilience

On the thirteenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, my thoughts today are with the people whose lives changed so tragically and so dramatically when their loved ones died. It may not feel to them as if thirteen years has passed since this horrific event.  It may feel as though their loss happened yesterday.  That’s the trick that grief can sometimes play on us.  For no matter how much time has passed, no matter how much work has been put out to move the healing process forward, the anniversary of losing a loved one is a day filled with powerful conflicting… Read More

6 Unbreakable Sibling Bonds

Today is a post giving you a little slice of my family life.  A shout-out to my brothers and sisters if you will. I am the oldest of six children.  We are four girls and two boys and are incredibly close in age: there is only seven years between me and my youngest siblings who are twins. I have written a lot about the healing gift of friendship and the important role that my friends play in my life but I haven’t said much about the healing gift of my siblings mainly because I know they don’t want to read… Read More
