There is nothing like a farmer’s market.  I am totally into them.

You can ask anyone who knows me about how much I love to either walk to a farmer’s market or pull the car over to the side of the road to check one out.

Some of my favorites include the farmer’s market in Bethany Beach, Delaware and the farmer’s market located in one of New York City’s great public space, Union Square.

Yesterday was the season opener for the farmer’s market near my office in Washington, DC so you know I was a happy person as … Read More

Straight Up Healthy

There’s something about a farmer’s market that makes me feel healthy right away. I don’t have to buy or eat anything, even though I usually do.  Just standing in the midst of the farmers and their stands overflowing with fresh organic food reflecting their hard work and the bounty of the season fills me with happiness. And yesterday I was one happy lady when I walked from my office in downtown Washington, DC to the FRESHFARM Market that is set up every year about a block from the White House (www.freshfarmmarkets.org).  Last week marked the opening of a new farmer’s… Read More

Kindness In a Me, Me, Me Culture

No matter what our age or place in life, we always remember the people who are kind. For instance, during the homily of a friend’s funeral, I found myself sitting by myself because I had a arrived a little late and my friends were in another part of the church.  As I listened to the beautiful words of the priest’s eulogy, I put my head down as tears began to roll down my face.  I will never forget the simple gesture of the woman sitting next to me who gently put her hand on top of mine for a few… Read More

Strawberry Fields Forever

Once you have tasted a juicy strawberry, fresh, fresh, fresh from the local farm where it was grown, you will never want to eat another one of those grocery store strawberries (that are white inside) ever again. For the second week in a row, strawberries were the star yesterday at the FRESH Farm Farmer’s Market near the White House.  Beautiful, red, ripe strawberries were lined up in a row just waiting to be bought and eaten.   Photo Courtesy of FRESH Farm Markets I bought a huge amount of strawberries last week and so did a friend of mine from… Read More

White House Market Day Is Back!

YAY!!! The farmer’s market near the White House is now open for business on Thursdays and I’m so happy that fresh fruits and veggies are close to my office, ready to be picked and enjoyed. I’m so proud of myself! I took these pics myself! As I arrived today, there was almost a party atmosphere at the market today around 1 pm.  When I walked to the market area, which is one block from the White House (www.freshfarmmarkets.org), there were almost 200 people shopping and sampling local produce.  People were spilling out of their office buildings, shaking off the cold… Read More

Letitia Baldrige — Classy & True

Letitia Baldrige When I hear Letitia Baldrige’s name, it makes me sit up straighter and try to be better behaved. Baldrige, 86, was a walking encylopedia on what to do and what not to do in social situations and with her passing last week comes the unofficial closure on a time in American life when class and sophistication counted for something.  Also known as “Tish,” Baldrige became a public name when she worked in the White House as chief of staff and social secretary to First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. After her years at the White House, Baldrige then forged a… Read More

Pleasant Pops

As many times as I have been to the FRESHFARM markets near the White House to treat myself to the real flavors (or the real flava as my friends like to joke) of the farm fresh produce, I have never tried a Pleasant Pop.  Usually I set a certain amount of money to spend on the beautiful seasonal fruits and veggies sold each week by the local farmers and when the money’s gone, so am I. But today, it was 95 degrees and I didn’t go crazy on the tomatoes so I decided to join the line in front of… Read More

To market, To market

Photo by katieleekitchen If it’s Thursday, then it must be White House Farmer’s Market Day! Beautiful, juicy strawberries, freshly washed pesticide-free kale and farm grown tomatoes were all lined up on the tables today and looking fabulous.  It’s a treat for me to get out of the office and feel the warm welcoming sun on my face as I walk the four blocks to the market, one of the city’s many farmer’s markets where people can consistently find unlimited and natural nutrients. Today there was a new vendor.  I didn’t see the name of the farm but I believe it… Read More

Seize the Freshest Foods of May

Yeah!!! The FRESHFARM Market by the White House opened yesterday for its summer/fall season and the freshest and greenest produce was on its’ best behavior sitting in beautiful baskets just begging to be bought, tossed, grilled and eaten. It’s too early in the season for my favorite farm grown tomatoes, but yesterday’s vendors showed off plenty of fresh salad greens, asparagus, kale, bean sprouts and other seasonal crops for urban workers to choose from along with colorful fresh cut flowers and cookies and breads. I could feel the beginnings of summer as I walked from my office to the farmer’s… Read More
