“Life loves to be taken by the lapel and told, ‘I’m with you, kid.  Let’s go.'”

                                                                   ~ Dr. Maya Angelou

Let’s go indeed!  Did Dr. Maya Angelou take every opportunity to grab life by the lapels? You bet she did!

Every day she grabbed life by the lapels and the seat pants and she held on for dear life, inspiring and showing us through her writings, speeches and screen presence the true passions of her life: civil rights, being kind, education and striving to do the best in whatever you are doing.

Angry Grief Is Not Pretty

Angry grief is not pretty; especially the white hot, messy anger that Richard Martinez is feeling. Uncomfortable as it is to watch, everything Martinez is feeling is normal and human.  He is expressing the rage and the sorrow he feels right now at the tragic loss 0f his son.  We aren’t used to watching someone freely express their unfiltered, raw anger about the loss of a loved one.  Our culture sends us the message that it’s better to keep a lid on it.  Don’t emote all over the place. Yet Martinez has experienced a shock, a deep loss that is… Read More

American Flags Flying Free

Memorial Day signals the beginning the summer.  Time to uncover the grills, open the windows, plant some flowers, enjoy the warmer temperatures and find a place to display the patriotic red white and blue of our beautiful American flag. I love the design of the American flag and never tire of seeing it.  Whether flying on a flag pole, painted on canvas, magnatized on a car bumper, planted in the ground or tatooed on human skin, the stars and stripes, the red, white and blue of it, always makes me think twice about being lucky enough to be born in… Read More

Just in the nick of time my good friends, Friday has arrived on the scene. And not just any Friday, but a Friday leading us into a three day holiday weekend.  YES! I work hard, just as you do, and I also take a lot of pride in the work I do.  But at the end of the day, work is work and everybody needs a break from it.  I am not one of those people who subscribe to the idea that if I put in long hours at the desk or computer I will get more accomplished.  To me,… Read More

I write today from a new platform. This Word Press platform is still under construction because I am essentially doing it all by myself.  Every day, I work on the content and try to bring it up to date.  It may not appear that I am doing anything to change the look of Cry Laugh Heal but please be assured that I am. I am not a person who runs from challenges but I must admit that this challenge has been more than I expected.  There may have been a way to prevent some of the issues I am… Read More

This I Believe — Book Excerpt

“This I Believe” is a fantastic book that keeps on giving inspiration to me. I recently discovered this book quite by accident.  I was in Richmond, Virginia with my son and his girlfriend and we came upon a local non-profit that was giving away books for free.  I couldn’t believe it.  Free. Books. Free books are irresistible to me.  This would be similar to offering the editor of Vogue free clothes and accessories.  A room of tables full of all kinds of books just waiting for someone to come along and adopt them and take them home.  Where do I… Read More

Farmer In The Dell

I love farmer’s markets. Everything about them fascinates me.  I slow down and totally lose track of time as I enjoy walking from vendor to vendor and talking to each one of them about the unique products they are selling whether it’s veggies, fruits, honey, cheeses, breads, soaps or food being cooked to order. Yesterday it truly felt as if the weather had turned a corner and while it was a bit chilly the sun was bright and increasingly warm as the day progressed.  People with their children and dogs and friends and neighbors strolled and chatted each other up… Read More
