how grief works

Just as we all grieve differently, we all heal differently.

Healing is a personal search for hope; a trial and error process of looking for a new purpose; a way to feel a little more centered again as you try to make sense of what life is about for you and perhaps your children after a loved one’s death.

I think it took me about eight to ten months after my husband’s death to realize that I couldn’t figure it all out on my own and I had to find help.

Unfortunately, as much as family and friends try to … Read More

The renowned British author, J. K. Rowling When life is zipping along and everything seems to be working as if it were a lean mean beautiful machine of happy events, it’s difficult to imagine that it won’t always continue that way. And for you it is my fondest wish that happy events constantly fill your life. And I do mean constantly!   Road trips are part of the American way of life. Maybe this weekend you, your friends or family have a road trip planned to take advantage of this transitional time of year: picking out your special pumpkins, checking out the leaves turning glorious reds and yellows or just visiting a new destination. Road trips can help us recharge our inner selves.  You know.  That inner voice.  That oh so precious deep core of ourselves that keeps us one with the horizon and helps us process the ups and downs of this beautiful and crazy trip called life. I know… Read More

Actor Matt Damon Plays An Astronaut In the newly released movie, The Martian My 25-year-old son went to see the new Matt Damon movie, The Martian, the other night and he was telling me that he enjoyed it a lot because it made him think about his deceased father. The Martian is a new movie about an astronaut who is mistakenly left on Mars, presumed to be dead after a fierce storm.  It’s a warm science fiction, adventure techie kind of movie that pokes fun at the geekier side of life. My son’s Dad was an award-winning journalist who covered… Read More

Baby Shower Table Scape Notice the whale as centerpiece   My Mom and I hosted a baby shower for my niece yesterday and it was healing in a fun way to pause with my other sisters and close relatives to celebrate the arrival of a new family member. I think it’s always good news when a baby is on the way; beginnings are always exciting and so full of hope! At the shower we had an advice jar where people wrote their tips on slips of paper for my helping my niece transition to motherhood.  Here are a few examples… Read More

Yes! We have landed on Friday and it feels great right? To start Friday off in the right way, a friend shared a quirky and funny CBC Radio Wire Tap video with me and now I’d like to share it with you because that’s what friends do. If you have a little over four minutes, please watch this video until the end because there is a guy who really made me laugh and I think he will have the same effect on you. Have a great weekend and feel free to share this with your other friends! You… Read More

Constructive Living

So I find myself in an emotional place where I constantly feed my soul and busy brain with positive thoughts about life and the people that I care about. I also am working on centering myself through mediation and am learning the value of breathing. And I pray all the time: in the morning when I wake up, in the car, at work, at the grocery store and before I fall asleep. Yet several frustrating situations in my personal life continue to happen. Over and over again.  Even when I try to take regular breaks from the stress of them.… Read More

A Kind Connection

Mondays can sometimes feel a bit painful right? I find it helpful to plunge into a new work week by thinking about something positive or fun that may have happened to me over the weekend and those good feelings can help carry me through Monday. Something I will be thinking about today was an act of kindness that happened over the weekend from a person I hardly know. I was at a new yoga class on Saturday and while we were rolling up our mats after a peaceful session, some of us began to talk about Pope Francis and his… Read More

Hitting The Pause Button

This post may seem random but I promise if you hang with me I think you’ll see where I’m going. When I get home from work in the evening, I need to get out of my thoughts and do something that distracts me or relaxes me from whatever happened during the day.  I think it’s fair to say that most of us need to tune out the noise of everyday life and protect our well being. For me, I have to switch gears and clear my mind of work stuff.  There are usually two ways for me to do… Read More
