When I find myself in times of worry or stress, I often handle it by giving myself rewards.

I focus on the stressful or worrisome tasks that I have to deal with and then in the back of my mind I tell myself that when I’m done with whatever it is for the time being, I will do something that will make me feel better about life.

good things

For me, rewards are sometimes a critical part of managing the darker sides of life.  Rewards give me a boost and make me feel as though I can carry on.  It can be anything!  Nothing expensive but something that gives you incentive to get through a rough patch an on to the other side.  Although I do try not to always make it food because then I can get carried away with sweets but you should try it for yourself and see if this stress-buster idea works for you.

Some of the rewards I sometimes use for stress management are:

— Weight Watchers Dark Chocolate Raspberry Ice Cream bars;

— Listening to the radio and turning it up really loud when I hear a song I like or playing one of my favorite CD’s and turning that up loud while I sing along;

— Going for a long walk or a long run;

— Shopping at Home Goods or some of my favorite thrift or consignment stores;

— Making a spontaneous list of why I don’t like the way I am feeling when I am in the rough patch and what I can do to make it go away or make it feel a little better.  Not a list of things that I actually thoughtfully think about, but a list of things that come to mind right off the top of my head so I write down my pent up emotions.

— Buying new hand lotion or a luxurious soap.

We all have different ways of handling the situations in our lives that make us feel lonely or frustrated or anxious; situations that we wish would go away.  When we know it won’t go away, we can also tell ourselves that it’s time to pull up our Big Girl pants and do what needs to be done and then give ourselves a little present for the good job we did!!

I would love to hear what works for you.  Please feel free to share for your ideas might help someone else.

Thanks!!

    when I want a treat I go to the movies. Although it is expensive, with candy and a drink it can run in the thousands, I find going in the dark theatre and being taken away is wonderful. I hardly ever go to the movies, so this makes it even more rewarding.
