Healing Through Lavender

Mother Nature is one smart cookie.

She has given us natural remedies for anxiety, stress and other ailments but instead we choose to try and manufacture something that we think will be better; something that is usually full of chemicals and ends up causing environmental problems or making us sick.

Enter the healing herb of lavender, which is a beautiful and hardy perennial.

I discovered the healing benefits of lavender a little over a year ago and can’t say enough about it.  Smelling lavender immediately calms me.  While on vacation recently in Bethany Beach, DE, I went to the local … Read More

If you are looking for a book that will take you to a wickedly funny place and make you laugh out loud, then I highly recommend Carl Hiaasen’s new book, Bad Monkey, to you. I just finished reading it while on vacation at the beach last week and I loved it!  I can’t tell you how many times I was sitting in my beach chair with my book while my friends were talking and catching up with each other.  There I was, face stuck in the book, reading Bad Monkey and literally bursting out laughing at the smart, flip and… Read More

What Day Is It?

Vacation. Isn’t it a great word? Although it’s a verb, the word vacation doesn’t evoke action to me.  When I hear the word vacation I think about the air being let out of a balloon.  Or exhaling slowly. I am in vacation right now and I feel blessed to be having one.  I am off-schedule, under the radar and very much unplugged, living in an alternate universe of sleeping in, eating and reading books whenever I want and not knowing what time it is. Or even what day it is.  I haven’t turned on the television in days.  What a… Read More

So You Know You Can Dance!

July 27th, 2013

Everyone can dance.  And they should! For dancing gets you moving and helps you get rid of the stress and tension you are storing all over your body.  Dancing also helps you heal your soul. While listening to music, my mind momentarily stops thinking about hurt and pain and frustration as I allow my body to take over and lose itself in the rhythms and sounds of whatever is playing. Dancing is definitely therapeutic!!  And today, in Washington, DC, you can go to The Kennedy Center and dance pretty much all day to your heart’s desires.  Or you can do… Read More

Zumba Zumba

The guy who invented Zumba, Beto Perez, wears a black sleeveless T-shirt and says to me, “Feel the Music.” And I do! I am watching Beto, along with 5 other Zumba dance instructors on a DVD and I am taking the 20 minute Zumba express lesson in my house. What’s so great about Zumba? Well, for me Zumba feels more like fun rather than exercise and the workout burns mucho calories which I am always trying to do.  Having discovered Zumba this summer, I am finding it to be everything I heard.  First of all, the music is great!  It’s… Read More

Bananarama

I left a couple of bananas on my kitchen counter the other day and the current heat and humidity in Washington, DC ripened them so fast that in two days they were too mushy for my cereal.  I’m not one to throw food away, so I found my trusty banana bread recipe and baked them into golden goodness! This banana bread recipe below is from Martha Stewart’s best-selling book, Entertaining, and I highly recommend making it and having it on hand for a quick breakfast.  I once tried the recipe as muffins and they were okay but the recipe is… Read More

A Dancing Spirit

In a former life, many many years ago, my life’s ambition was to be a dancer. I just loved it and could think of doing nothing else.  So much so that I would take my younger sister and go to the record department in our local five and ten and dance in front of anyone who was there no matter what music was playing.  Hours and hours were spent studying ballet, modern dance, character dancing and just dancing for fun! I attended the Boston Conservatory for a short period of time before I had to drop out to have two… Read More

Renewing Friendships

Academy of the Holy Cross Yearbook 1972 Making friends for the world to see Let the people know you got what you need            ~ Elton John Over the weekend, I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to catch up and renew friendships with two women who went to high school with me. Both women are incredibly talented and very smart: one is an internationally respected sculptor and the other is a retired teacher/photographer. They both look great and we easily fell back into conversation about our lives since high school graduation which was (unbelievably!) many decades ago. We lost… Read More
